Need I have gone to Medical School?

An advertorial of a 'gbogbonise' drug I was given goes thus exactly the way it was printed:

Flush your body systems and be clear:
1. If someone has fever, be it hot or cold and is very weak,he is given 1 tablespoon of the drops, if he is not overloaded with other medications, will in a short time come to, the pulse will start to beat again and the fever, no matter how high it was, will pass and the patient will soon be better.

2. if the menstrual flow ceases for a woman or it is too heavy, she takes the drops for three days, what is too much quietens and what is too little, even out.

3.For morning sickness, 1drop in the morning for 3days. These drops should not be taken after drinking milk.

4. For toothache a tablespoon of these drops is taken without water and kept in the mouth for a little while or the aching tooth is moistened. the pain soon eases and the putrefaction dissappears.

5. For stomach ache 1tsp is taken.

6. For serious stomach ache . 2tablespoonful in half a cup of warm water are taken sloly and relief will soon be felt.

7.A drunk can be sober on the spot with 2tablespoonful.

8. He who takes these drops evenings daily needs no further medications, since they strengthen the body, tone up the nerves and the blood, take away the trembling of hands and feet. In short, they take away all illness. The body stays supple, the face young and beautiful.

The advertorial actually has 33 points for conditions which the drug is supposed to be used for but I got tired of copying the information from the leaflet. The drug actually has a NAFDAC number!

Anyway if the drug was so good us medicos would be out of business and we would not be seeing so many helpless patients. If it was the wonder drug some smart dude would have gotten a patent on it and become the richest dude this side of the sahara.

Knowing 'awon naija' boys the trade- manufacturing, distribution, retailership would replace the 'yahoo business" and wonder banks as the money making business in town.

Worst of all the numbers of medical doctors turned psychos with the sudden knowlege that all those years spent poring over medical books is a tremendous waste would hit the roofs. But what am I saying our wonder drug would be available to cure the lot!

ps- all typos are from the advertorial and not an indication of the grammatical ineptitude of this blogger:)

On the issue of Need I have gone to Medical School?

It is very unfortunate that "multipurpose" drugs are
rampant in Nigeria. The issue is, could the NAFDAC
number be fake or did he actually get the approval?

If he got the approval, it definitely can not be
through merit or he was over-exaggerating the
    indications.

This may call for re-examining how drug registration
and approval are done in Nigeria for these
    "over-specialized" local pharmacists.
For 'Western' medicine, before a drug is approved, it
goes through clinical trial. There are basically four
phases, but phases 1 and 2 are concerned with safety
and toxicity profiles of the drug.
This has to be safe in humans before it goes
through phase 3 to examine its definitive efficacy.

I guess NAFDAC should subject the drugs from
'home grown' pharmacists to similar conditions for
safety and toxicity checks. In addition, it should
only be marketed for the indication which approval was
sought, and not marketing it as a wonder drug for all
    medical problems.

Lastly, the field of drug registration is dynamic.
Thus, NAFDAC workers need re-training on Good
Pharmacy and Laboratory Practice, and be adequately
    equipped with facilities that
    can ensure good quality assurance.

    Thanks
