Auschwitz & Others

Image
Over the last few days I have watched more films than I have watched in the last year! Most of the films have been tear jerkers but more importantly they have been thought provoking. I watched two films that have turned me into an insomniac over the past couple of days. 'The boy in the striped Pyjamas' and 'God on Trial'. The first film kept me awake almost all night, I spent the night thinking and going over what I would have done if I was a Jew in a concentration camp or a Nazi General or a member of the generals family? Would I have stood up for the Jews or turned my back against them? At the risk of spoiling the film for those who have not watched the film, I'll just say that both films are based on the experience of the Jews in concentration camps. The trial of God is said to have been held at Auschwitz. I have heard the stories several times and read a lot about the atrocities committed during those times but seeing a depiction of the scenes with all the human

My Niece~

Image
Lase watching the ducks! My niece and her mum came visiting a few weeks ago and right now I miss her so much. I spoke with her yesterday and asked her when next she was coming to visit me, her answer which was 'today' made me smile. Considering it will take at least a day to get here from where she is that would be quite a task. She will be 3 in a few days and it is amazing that she has grown literally like a bean stalk. She has quite an amazing vocabulary for her age and she delights everyone she comes across by talking incessantly about anything and everything. She is a sponge and if you dont want her to repeat anything dont say it in front of her. She loves to sing and when you ask her to sing for you the first song out of her mouth is 'Jesus loves the little children, all the children of the world'. Other songs she spontaneously bursts into are 'Mr Macaroni riding on a bicycle' 'As I was going to the market, going to the fair, I met a Senorita with some

My name:)

I love my name. Anyone who knows me well knows that! I have always been called 'Tomi right from the time I was born I guess but it must have been in Secondary school that I suddenly realised that my full name Olaoluwatomi was much more meaningful and unique and though I still kept being called 'Tomi I started signing all my notes, letters and writing my name in full on my note and textbooks. One of my classmates in secondary school gave her son that name tracing her love for the name to a note I had written her where I had signed my name! I have been subjected to somewhat mild torture:) over the last few months with regards to my name. The first session came not long after I started grad school and went for a session with the career counsellor. He took one glance at my name on my resume and asked me how I pronounced it. I gladly pronounced it and launched into a lecture on what my name meant when he shook his head and made the first amendment to my resume. 'Stick with Tomi

A jolly video!

My first game!

One of the perks of being a JJC (newbie) in a place is experiencing what the locals take for granted on a daily basis.   I remember walking into a fast food restaurant and asking for salad, I was asked what kind of dressing I wanted with my salad and had to choose from a long list. The only problem was that I had never heard the names of any of the dressings and it was with great amusement that the waiter told me what each dressing was! I guess I made his day for he would have something amusing to talk to his friends about for as long as he can remember:) Anyway I just wanted to share with you pictures of my first baseball game.  Many thanks to Jean who picked me up, got me a ticket, explained the fine points of the game, gave me a running commentary of some of the players that came up to pitch, bat etc and took me back home I had a swell time. I had for a long time wondered what the game was about and I finally had a chance to go see for myself. The part of the game I loved the

Thanksgiving!

Image
81. Farewells! Had a great time with my sister, niece and mum coming over for my graduation, wiped a few tears sliding down my face at the airport while saying goodbye. 82. Great roommates! 83. Friends who stick closer than brothers. 84. Words of encouragement. 85. The knowledge that this too will pass away! I am at the point in the life of my blog when words fail me and I can only write silent posts, I see the pages of my blog filled even when others see empty space. I can only say that God alone sees what I write and when the time comes others will see it too. I guess this is a time of waiting, pruning, and for now silence. My thanksgiving posts will continue for I seek to remain thankful. The words will return when my pen is refilled with ink. When? Maybe tomorrow, maybe a year, for now I simply do not know!
