Scenes from Graduation!

The Cape, Hood and Gown!

Image
I received my graduation robes yesterday. It was a relief to actually be handed a clean gown. Those who went to school with me in naija understand what I mean. As an undergraduate I did not get a gown for matriculation because I did not go early enough to pick a gown from the store. As a graduate I had to go through a stack of dirty, cockroach infested gowns to get a gown my size and of course laundered my gown before the big occasion. You can be sure that many got gowns not their sizes or with rents big enough to slide their diplomas through. It was not a pleasant experience and yes we did pay for the gowns, whether you got one or not! So I'll be proudly wearing my gown tomorrow devoid of any moth balls or smells! Yay!

When all fades...

Image
When you are faced with JAMB or MB's how important does the common entrance exam seem? When you are faced with the death of a loved one how important was the quarrel you had yesterday? When you are faced with a grim prognosis on a shocking diagnosis how important is the plastic surgery you are scheduled to have in a couple of weeks? When you are told the news that rocks your world, how important is the car you have been saving to buy? When you are face to face with death, what stands out loud and clear when all else fades into oblivion? Final Words- What really are the most important things in life- The pursuit of a career or family? The accumulation of wealth on earth or in heaven? The love of friends who dont love you or family that does? The striving after things that are really not important or the pursuit of happiness? These questions aint rhetorical, they require answers that can only be brought about through an examination of our hearts and motives! Selah!

66. Thankful for the end of the school year and my new degree! 67. Thankful for Ty and Lase:) 68. Thankful for friends who I have not seen in years and joyful reunions. 69. Thankful for colors, sounds and touch. 70. Thankful for a new phase, a new beginning, new opportunities!

Another Phase!

I seem to embark on new phases every year and Im thankful for the opportunity to start something new and exciting. This time last year I was worried about starting a new journey as a student, about the leap into the unknown, about jumping from paid employment to life as a student on a stipend! I received encouragement and wind in my sails and I can say a year later Im glad I took that leap of faith. I wrote my last paper yesterday and so I can proudly say I have completed my year in school. I would love to thank my parents who not only stood by me as I made this decision but provided for me during this year, their sacrifice will not be in vain. I am grateful for siblings who were my encouragement all through the year (my brothers and sister), my niece, cousins, friends, teachers and everyone who wished me well. As I start on this new phase of my life, I pray that the seeds I have sown will bud, blossom and yield fruit and I'll continually plant seeds that will reap a great harvest

Am I trusting?

Image
I trust God when there is food in my belly and food in the store, do I trust Him when I am hungry and have no idea about where my next meal will come from? I trust God when I am whole and hearty and full of strength, do I trust Him when my body aches and my flesh melts away diseased? I trust God when there is joy in my heart and laughter in my soul, do I trust Him when the clouds of depression chase away my smiles? I trust God when I have a job and can pay my bills, do I trust Him when my account is empty and the bills pile up by the hour and all I get are rejections and silence from employers? I trust God when friends and family surround me and fill my empty heart, do I trust Him when no one knocks on my door for days, when there is no mail for me, when phone calls are non existent? When I feel abandoned? I trust God when the weather is nice and warm, when the heat is off and the gas bills go down, do I trust Him in the dead of winter when the house seems to suck out all the warmth an

In the Hands of Time!

I remember when I was six or a little bit older and my main worries were learning my multiplication tables and getting a perfect score in the early morning mental sums that was the first activity of the day in Primary school. Then I was nine and getting a score that would land me in the best secondary school in the country was my major worry. Then I got admitted into the school of my choice and avoiding the seniors who could make my life miserable was my next biggest headache. Then it was getting all A's in the Junior and Senior Secondary School Certificate Exam, then it was the University Matriculation Exam, then exams and vivas in Medical School............................... All my life it seems I have worried about exams and nothing more. My life has revolved around school and the ubiquitous tests and exams and Its been difficult worrying about other things. Time has a way of making you look back on all you worried about in the past and all you can do is laugh. In retrospect, I

10 things I love!

Image
Saw this on NBB's blog and decided to write my own list too! 1. I love a good book, one written as if a story is being told with just the right words. A book that has the ability to transport me to another world without effort and bring me crashing back to earth when the story ends. One good book I remember that fits this description is 'The Good Earth' by Pearl. S. Buck. 2. I love receiving letters. I like it when someone spends time to write me a long newsy letter. I probably would not love letters if I got them everyday but having one every once in a while can lift ones spirits. 3. I love ice-cream:) Who doesn't? I have a friend who loves it more than I do and I love looking at her eyes when she mentions Ice-cream, her face lights up in pure delight and it almost looks like she can taste it at that moment, I love teasing her about this. We spent many days in Mumbai visiting the loveliest ice cream shop I have ever come across, they make ice cream with fresh f
