The foolish things you do when young!

Image
My childhood was bliss probably because I was a child and the innocence that comes with being a child shields you from the harsh realities life has to offer. Only when the years roll by does the screen of innocence fade away and then you realise that what you thought was bliss was a mirage. Anyway I wonder how many of you remember what it was like to be young and free and of course foolish. I laugh and wonder at how one could ever have done half of the things we did as youngings! Almost all our holidays were spent in the land of beauty 'my home town'. One of the great attractions was that we were free from the restrictions of school. Not quite though! We spent the holidays (every single one of them including mid term breaks) with our grandparents. My grandmum was a teacher of the 'no nonsense' variety so even though we were on holidays we had a fairly regimented schedule. We would wake up in the morning, do our chores, bathe, eat, have a mini school session where &#

IT IS GOOD TO GIVE THANKS....

..... to the Lord for His mercies endure forever 266-270 I am grateful : for a father I can talk to and conversations that make 2 hours seem as short as a quarter of an hour that I can give thanks ! I'm happy I don't have to stumble through a pile of ungratefulness to actually come up with things to thank God for! for a journey that is coming to an end , my life seems to be in phases and I eagerly await the beginning of another leg of the journey for streams in the desert , many times when it looks like I have reached the end of my rope and I am dying just to have a drink of water, a well appears in my path and I actually have more than I could ever think or imagine! for short stories that not only draw out a chuckle but teach wonderful lessons, I am reading short stories by Lucy Maud Montgomery, she wrote the Anne of Green Gables series and I have without shame been given to sudden fits of laughter in the Metro or buses on my way to and from work! I do not look up

Natural by Force or by Choice!

I last had my hair straightened or relaxed in May 2009. It seems like an eternity ago! The only way I escaped it was by braiding my hair and having it woven in the 'adimole' / 'didi' styles in Bauchi and Katsina states where I worked. Since I came to the States I have only braided my hair once and I can tell you it would probably be the last time too:) I spent six times the amount of money I would have spent in Nigeria for braids that did not last more than 6 weeks. They were poorly done and all the time I spent having my hair braided did not translate into any savings of both  my time and money. 'Didi' to the Side! Didi by a wonderful lady in Bauchi who refused to collect any money for making my hair! Same style different angle! Ever since I had the last set of braids out I have been making my own hair both with disastrous and sometimes pleasant results. If I was in Nigeria I am sure I would have received a barrage of subtle and not so subtle req

A weekend filled with food!

Image
What can be better than this? Many things I wager. I started off the weekend by meeting two friends at Eatonville for brunch! I loved the decor, ambience, music and of course the menu. This lovely statement written on the walls as you step indoors made me smile! It is so true. I then headed off to my friends for the weekend were she spent the time conjuring up mouth watering dishes. The downside was the vast amount of time needed to produce these culinary delights. The cook was Catherine my friend from Kenya who treated her Nigerian sister to mouth watering Kenyan dishes with the preparation of a mexican dish thrown in as 'jara'! The photgrapher is my humble self:)(whoever came up with that description of humility must have been joking) Enjoy the pics! The Menu! Courtney's Meal Norah's plate My bowl of fruit! Aint I a healthy eater:) My real plate of food! Biscuits that melted in my mouth and chicken! Courtney pointed out these fans! E
