A prophet is not recognised.........

The end of the title is ....in his own hometown and that quote comes from the bible where jesus could not performany miracles in Nazareth because the people knew everything about him and they could not reconcile the runny nosed little boy who played with their kids to the preacher with healing powers. This well known quote has gone beyond just being a cliche to being very true, after all the first person who spoke the words is all truth.

If i was the first doctor to come from my country, town, village, local government, street or even family i guess the statement may not apply to me, but when im one of the very manydoctors to come from where i do, why does anyone have to reckon with anything i say or do, especially if im one of the youngest. Afterall with the aged comes experience!

These facts were brought home with slghtly more force recently when i had to take care of an aged relative. I was in between jobs and was therefore the only available candidate for the job. I proceeded to her house with no preconceived notions just determined to do a good job. She had recently been ill. I took her for an appointment to see the dentist after i got there.

The next day she proceeded to inform me about a very good doctor who was said to be an expert in the treatment of a chronic disease she had, on further enquiry she was already attending a private clinic for treatment of the same disorder. I gently counselled her to continue with her doctor who already knew a lot about her instead of jumping train to start afresh and she agreed.

The very next day she wanted to call yet another doctor who she said someone had gven money to to look after the same condition. On further enquiry i found out that the latest doctor was not a specialist in the field that her disorder came under. That is not to say that he could not handle it but i was suddenly tired of all her shopping for a doctor especially as she had one living with her for the mean time.

I do not subscribe to treating my relations but when the problem at hand is nothing major and can be solved with a few words of advice why not? The trend amongst them however is to pay a terrible sum of money to a so called doctor who does more harm than good. For example a relation of mine is most likely diabetic and had a wound on his leg that refused to heal, so what did he go ahead to do? He visited a 'doctor' who gave him one tablet at a cost of 1,500naira to use in a single dose, the tablet was said to work like magic with the wound drying up at once. No mention was made of any blood tests, other medications and lifestyle modidication. He believes this doctor since his 'magic potion' worked and any suggestion to receive further medical care will be met with the stern indifference. After all when did i become a magic doctor?

I guess its a Nigerian phenomenom that the more money spent is an indication of the increased quaity of the service given, i think that is utter crap because many times i have seen higher standards of care coming from places where the attendant remuneration in terms of fees paid is poor when compared to other places! Maybe when this fever is cleared from the minds of our people i will get the proper attention from my people when i tell them how to take care of their common colds.
