I B A D A N

I spent a day in Ibadan last week and it was really nice to see the changes that had occurred since I left University. The University of Ibadan was a delight to behold, everywhere looked so much better than when I was a student. Unfortunately I did not have my camera with me when I visited the University so I could not take any pictures. Most of the pictures below are of the University College Hospital which also had many new additions- a ramp for easier access of the floors, new car parks, a whole new set of building opposite the college, so UCH is on both sides of the recently expanded and refurbished Queen Elizabeth Road. I was really impressed! I was also amazed at the prompt service I got at both the University and the College, It took me only a few hours to get all the documents I needed in contrast to the weeks cited by some people! At the end of the day I was happy at the change which I know has come to stay:)       University College Hospita...

Dear Lagos,

Image
Dear Lagos, Traffic on the Island! I am not sure I really love you but I do like you as   somehow my life has been entwined with you from my very early years. I grew up in Anthony Village and most of what I knew about you was within the four walls of the compound where I grew up and the four walls of elementary school.   Then I grew up and then my walls expanded to include Opebi, Allen avenue, Ketu, Yaba, Ikoyi, Victoria Island, Ikeja, Surulere and many other places. I remember walking from place to place and getting to know you better though not necessarily liking you! Almost all of my childhood memories have been within your borders so that at least gives you a pass on my scale of cities to live in! I remember the queues of the WAI brigade, I remember the Abiola riots in ’93, the EYO festival celebrations in the heart of Eko. I remember the street parties and the blaring from the DJ’s speakers before street parties where banned! I remember the colorful market places ...

To Sir with love, So long a letter, letters from the heart!

Having stuff to write about on a blog has depended a great deal on what I am going through at any one point in my life. I have found that I write more when I have a lot of work to do and the converse is true. I found this idea on several blogs- to write letters to different people. I have modified it to suit me and I will probably change it a bit more. One thing I love to do is write letters and for those who have been on the recieving end of my letters they know I tend to get a bit long winded especially when I am trying to describe things or convey the excitement I feel if there is something particularly awesome going on in my life. With the advent of twitter, facebook and blackberry pinging, writing letters seems to be a dying art and though I try to keep in touch with friends and family via emails, the one liners I get in reply (which I am sure are in keeping with the bb pinging mode) almost plunge my heart into depression, though I try to comfort myself my saying its bette...

Going Home!

Image
“Where we love is home, Home that the feet may leave, but not our hearts.” ― Oliver Wendell Holmes I have had to think about that word 'home' over the last couple of days and I have been wondering where exactly its supposed to be! I am more or less a nomad and ever since I went away to University, the word 'Home' has meant different things to me at different times in my life. As a young child in elementary school, going home meant leaving behind the drudgery of school work for a place where the TV beckoned and lunch was occasionally the dreaded beans combined with wonderful dodo! Home was the end of a delightful day when the parents would tuck us into bed with the telling of delightful tales about Tortoise or Jack and the bean stalk.  Home was the village during the holidays where the grandparents were always delighted to welcome their brood of grandchildren, where we had the run of the compound, where we visited the goats, chickens, fish, rabbits and gen...

Grouchy but Thankful

I am thankful for Disappointments which remind me that life is not always so smooth and things don't have to go the way I want them to go! Counsel that makes me realize that sometimes my glasses are cloudy and rose-tinted and looking through another pair of spectacles is sometimes what is needed to gain the right perspective. Love from friends and family showing me that I do not have to go through the maze of life alone. Feelings of dissatisfaction that spur me on to be more, seek more and do more. An experience of life on the other side of the fence showing me that the grass is different and not necessarily greener. Me as crazy as it sounds.
