Life as a student!
Its nice to be a student again after working for sometime!:) I remember the days I was in boarding school with nostalgia and how parents and teachers asked us to enjoy these days and yet we itched with the usual impatience of youth to leave the classrooms for the worldwide class which seemed more exciting and less restrictive than the walls that surrounded us then.
Now with the wisdom of the aged (mo ti daurgbo die:)* I can look back and say they were so right! I have tasted the two worlds and know the sweeter! I know the world is a teacher but as a student you have only one responsibility and that is to learn. As a worker you take full responsibility of tasks assigned you. You can't use the students favorite escape route phrase 'I don't understand' In today's world of scarce jobs you cant be in the dark about what you are supposed to be doing, many wait at the door to take your place.
I remember and love a classmates retort to a particularly 'what's the word?' teacher who during a ward round upbraided him for not knowing the answer to a particular question, his calm but measured answer gave us the opportunity to cheer silently (you dared not do it loudly) at his boldness which made sure that none of us had to answer any more questions at the round that day. After being intimidated with phrases of how empty his head must be and so on and so forth, he calmly spoke up and said 'Sir, that is why I am here, I am here to learn! It was an answer classic in its implications and of course gained him more admiration from his fellow classmates whose 'livers' were not sufficiently enlarged to give back such retorts at the learned ones!
These days as a student all I need to do is wake up in the morning and go to school, If I have exams I can be sure that goodwill messages would flood my phone and email box, as a worker no one was particularly interested in the challenges one faced at work, like the readers digest column it was 'All in a days work'. You are accorded special privileges and for those still in that category pocket money keeps on flowing from kin all over the world. As a worker even if your take home salary could not take you home, no one offered to give you any monetary gifts or subsidize your travel costs, afterall what are you using your money to do? You would probably find more hangers on inserting their proboscis into your purse than fuel stations trying to fill it for you!
I remember the story I dont know if it was an anecdote it was about a man who made sure he was enrolled in program after program for a very long time, he must have been over 50years when the news came up. A wealthy relative had left him a sum of money which was to continue to be sent to him as long as he was a student and so year in year out he made sure he fulfilled the stipulation of the will. 'The curse of an inheritance' if I may say so denied him the opportunity of finding out about the real world so as to hang on to a world which for every one should be temporary.
As much as I enjoy the status of being a student, I can't wait to get back to the real world where I can earn some money and not have to rely on the students excuse. Im sure once I arrive there I'll be nostalgic for the world I have left behind, but thats life for you, the grass is always greener on the side you are away from!
Have a blessed week!

A student once again? What are you studying? You're right that both sides of the grass have their perks. I think I'm happy to be done with school but then whenever I ponder what I would do if I won a million dollars, "go to school" always comes to mind, which is pretty interesting to me.
ReplyDeleteHave a great week, Tomi.
